Subaru Impretza

Model History

The Impreza was first introduced into the UK around 1994 with 2 engine options a 1.6 and 1.8 these where available in either 4 or 5 door versions. All models at this point where 4 wheel drive.

1995 saw the introduction of the front wheel drive models which where removed from the range very soon afterwards.

1996 saw the change from the 1.8 to a 2.0 engine and the introduction of the Sport and Turbo 2000 models. These early Turbo models had a rather poor interior and the engine was fairly unrefined compared to the later models. These early model cars had a larger turbo charger than the later cars which meant that the difference between on boost and off boost was considerably greater.

1997 saw a major revamp of the vehicles with different interiors and some minor cosmetic changes to the exterior of the vehicles. The Turbo model received a much revised engine which increased the maximum torque by 5% and decreased the rpm it was produced at to 4000.

1998 saw another revamp of the interiors although no where near as big as the one done for 1997. Externally the wheels where changed to 16 inch ones as oppose to the 15 inch wheels that had been on the Turbo models up until now. The interior plastic trim was redesigned to be very similar to the Forrester.

1999 and yet another revamp new things this year include up-rated brakes changing them to 4 pot calliper's at the front with larger discs to address one of the criticisms which the car has had for some time. The front bumper is also revised which gives the car a more aggressive stance and the rear spoiler is swapped for a larger item. The engine is also changed to the Boxer phase 2 which gives an extra 10 PS. The other most noticeable thing to change is the headlights and fog lights which have gone to a multi reflector design which is designed to increase the light output.
